Hoffman Foundation Scholarship 2008 Recipients
 Austin Camp ~ Bullard High School ~ University of Texas
Austin graduated 3rd in his class with a 3.95 GPA. He states that it is his dream and passion to get a college education as many opportunities will open up for him, particularly his career goal as an Orthopedic Surgeon. During his High School years he has been involved in many social and academic activities. He was part of a missionary team through his church Bullard Southern Baptist Church to reach children and youth in Arad, Romania. He was on the National Honor Society and Who’s Who American Among High School Students.
Austin’s interests include all kinds of sports, hunting and hiking. He plans to attend University of Texas at Austin.
Gwendolyn Coleman-Shepherd ~ Nimitz Senior High ~ Prairie View A&M University
As a senior, Gwendolyn was in the top 10% of her class. She is described as a young woman with great leadership skills, dedication, integrity and commitment to excellence. She has served as the Vice President of Health Occupation Students of America, Vice President of the Houston Area Urban League and actively involved in other organizations and community service such as Nimitz Blood Drive, International Thespian Society, National Honor Society and Black History Club.
The medical profession is where Gwendolyn has set her sights. She has a passion for helping people and making a difference in the healthcare system. She plans to attend Prairie View A&M University to become a doctor.
William Fuentes ~ Aldine High School ~ University of Texas at Austin
William will be the first in his family to attend college. Both his parents dropped out of school to work and William is determined to further his education, which he believes assures a better life for him and his family. Described as wise and mature beyond his years, he maintained an impeccable grade point average, ranked 7th in a class of 592, all while holding a job and being involved many extracurricular activities.
Accepted to the School of Cockrell Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, William wants to be an Aerospace Engineer. He enjoys soccer, music, karate and most of all flying.
 Jamiya Hagger ~ Nimitz High School ~ Prairie View A&M University
“My relentless passion will guide my mission to enable and produce the finest students in the nation”, is what Jamiya believes. She has decided to pursue a career as a teacher so that she can guide young people to better themselves. During her high school years, she was a serious, focused student, but also friendly and enthusiastic – involved in band, soccer, yearbook, Vice President of her class and peer tutoring.
Jamiya plans to attend Prairie View A&M University. She enjoys writing, music and helping others.

Amanda Hamilton ~ Barbara Jordan High School for Careers ~ Prairie View A&M University
Amanda was extremely active in high school. Community service included Salvation Army Toy Drive, Breast Cancer Walk, March of Dimes Walk and Adopt a Block to name a few. Some of her honors are Most Studious Student, National Honor Society, Recognition by the President of the United States and Recognition by State Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.
She is one who perseveres and accomplishes goals set forth for herself. Not only does she represent her school well but also the Health Science Technology Program because she possesses professionalism, integrity, empathy and leadership skills. Amanda enjoys cooking, sewing, swimming and dancing. She will pursue a career as a Malpractice Attorney.
Travis Lampley ~ Reagan High School ~ University of Texas at Austin
Travis was enrolled in the Computer Technology Program at Reagan High School, where he developed his leadership skills and confidence. He’s described as possessing an insight into the world around him that is rare for one his age. His academic goal is the obtain Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Accounting and on to become a Certified Public Accountant.
While in High School, Travis was actively involved in community service such as a summer and after school volunteer and March of Dimes Walks. He enjoys fishing, bike riding, basketball, baseball and golf.
KhrisTina Melton ~ Kashmere High School ~ Prairie View A&M University
KhrisTina is known as an outstanding person and a leader, who exhibits good management skills with the ability to work well with people. She has participated in the Student Council, Marching and Jazz Bands, Future Business Leaders of America, Tennis and Kashmere’s Book club. Her community service includes the Houston Food Bank, American Red Cross, volunteering at His Way Baptist Church working with children’s ministry.
“Greater opportunity to succeed in society”, is what a college education means to KhrisTina. She has chosen a career in Early Childhood Education, because she loves working with children.

Joshua Moore ~ Nimitz High School ~ University of Texas at Austin
Getting a college education has been a part of Joshua’s life since he was very young. Some of his family members that have gone on to obtain bachelors’ and doctorates have positively influenced Joshua’s decision to be a productive member of society. He has a great love for biology, physics, other sciences and math. He wants to become a doctor and open his practice in the Houston area.
Joshua is a bright, well-rounded young man. At church, he serves as a Junior Deacon, youth choir member and youth usher. He’s participated in neighborhood and school Canned Food drives, collected funds for soldiers; served as National Honor Society board member and Student council office.

Chinedum Onyekwelu ~ Thurgood Marshall High School ~ Prairie View A&M University
In high school, this young man is described as a leader that shows great initiative, maturity and honesty. He cares about people and respects education, as is shown by his active participation at the Fort Bend County libraries, Missouri City Bazaar and School Office Aid.
Chinedum wants a college education because of the determination of his mother. His family arrived in America, from Nigeria, when he was four years old. His mother, against all odds, attended college and became a registered nurse. This has inspired him to further his education, work hard, and be successful at whatever he chooses to do. He has been accepted to Lamar University and Prairie View A&M University.
Domineq Strothers ~ Lamar High School ~ Lamar University
In high school, she has been an outstanding student, demonstrating leadership, maturity and responsibility. Recognized as a Who’s Who Among American High School Students, she’s also volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House, Children’s Museum of Houston and St. George & St. Patrick Episcopal Church schools.
Domineq is ready to fulfill her dreams of becoming a Nurse. She accepts the challenge of college with commitment and determination. In her words, “a college education gives you a chance to discover who you are”. She enjoys cheerleading, reading and listening to music.
