Michelle Abii
Michael E. DeBakey High School
Houston Baptist University

Michelle has distinguished herself during her high school career as a dynamic and hard working student. While attending DeBakey High School for Health Professions, she was an active member in several clubs and organizations. She has represented her school in competition in Health Occupations Students Dental Assisting, Speech, and Debate. During her busy schedule, she also found time for community service, working with Texas Children's Hospital, Junior Statesmen of America, American Red Cross, Girls Incorporated of Greater Houston. She also worked part time with Sisters of Grace.

Michelle comes highly recommended by all who know her. She has been accepted to Houston Baptist University and plans to pursue forensic science while attending college.


Ashley Barnes
Michael E. DeBakey High School
Baylor University

Ashley has chosen a career in the medical field, as either a Pediatrician or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. She feels that diligence and experience are the key factors to her approach in the medical field. In addition to challenging AP courses Ashley has held various offices and contributed numerous volunteer hours.

Ashley has received many awards and honors, including Who's Who Among America's High School Students, National Honor Roll, National Junior Achievement, HOSA - Medical Assisting Competition, HOSA - Parliamentarian Team Competition, and HOSA - Medical Spelling Competition.


Adam Castañeda
Barbara Jordan High School for Careers
University of Houston

Adam's accomplishments include being a recipient of three Regional Scholastic Writing Gold Key Awards, Texas Board of Education Celebration of Educational Excellence Award (2), Texas Future Teachers of America-President and Vocational Industrial Clubs of America-President. Adam's goal is to one day be able to teach at an urban high school that has yet to cultivate a love for literature and the written word.


Ann Marie Cunningham
High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice
Sam Houston State University

Ann Marie is graduating from the High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, third in her class, with a 3.8 GPA. Ann Marie is a recipient of the Principal's Leadership Award, National Honor Society secretary and the vice president of the Spanish Club, and Student Council.

Ann Marie has demonstrated a strong desire to attend college and understands the importance of a college education. She hopes to obtain a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice so that she may become a member of the U. S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. A school representative described Ann Marie as a "peacock" who, with her desire and ambition, will spread her wings and attain the very best for herself. Ann Marie will be attending Sam Houston State University.


Drake Dalcour
Mirabeau B. Lamar High School
Wiley College

Drake Dalcour has always aspired to go to college. However, in his first two years of high school he lacked some motivation. After adjusting to the high school scene, he quickly had a reality check and began to take school seriously. He made a personal commitment to himself. He is ambitious and believes in finishing what he starts. His goals include becoming a successful elementary-school teacher and, ultimately, an administrator. He is focused on his goals and determined to achieve them. Administrators in education and people who make a difference inspire him.

Drake is seventeen years old and the eldest grandchild in his family. He is very involved in his church and serves as a mentor for both his younger cousins and other children in the church. He feels that obtaining a college education will position him to encourage and inspire young men and women to get an education and become good citizens. As a college graduate, he wants to help and mentor others, as people have been a mentor to him. Drake gives all credit to God and keeps him first in his life.


Tundra Gibson
Barbara Jordan High School for Careers
University of Texas at Austin

Tundra's accomplishments include being a recipient of the USAA National Leadership Awards, Honor Society, Who's Who Among American High School Students, Student Council, HIV/AIDS Peer Education, Honor Roll - President, Health Occupation Students of America- Vice President. Tundra has always wanted to become a Pediatrician because of her love for nurturing ill children.


Felicia Hayes
Jack Yates High School
Prairie View A&M University

Felicia Hayes, is a student in the Magnet School of Communications at Jack Yates High School, where she is extremely active. She is Princess of the school's Royal Court of Miss Jack Yates 2003-2004 and serves as Treasurer of the National Honor Society and captain of the Varsity Cheerleaders. In addition to being active in school, she is one who gives back to the community by volunteering with the Star of Hope Shelter Food Drive, Third Ward Food Pantry and March of Dimes International Festival, just to name a few. She has been recognized for her community service work as a recipient of the "Making a Difference Award" and the Sylvia K. Brooks Humanitarian Award. She is a member of Top Teens of American - Sugar Valley Chapter, serving as President and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Leadership Program, donating more than100 hours in community service.

Felicia has been described as one who is extremely versatile and active. She is respectful, well mannered, and a delight to be around. She enjoys school and has worked hard to maintain good grades. She currently has a grade-point average of 4.25 and plans to attend either Prairie View A&M University or Xavier University where she will study Pre-Med with her sights set on becoming a Pediatrician.


Brandon Jackson
Booker T. Washington High School
University of Texas at El Paso

Brandon has set many goals for himself. His plans for the future are to first go to college and coach at a high school in Houston; his ultimate goal is to be drafted into the NFL. He takes education seriously and has been a good student. Brandon has focused on both his academic studies and his football shills. He wants to help athletes build and develop good character and teach them the rules of the game.

Brandon comes from a single-parent home. His mother is his sole support. He is determined to succeed. After graduating from college, he wants to be a mentor to other young people. He knows the importance of real men making a positive influence in the community. His determination, strength, and trust in God will guide him in obtaining his goals and completing his college education.


Cherry Jackson
Booker T. Washington High School
University of Texas at Austin

Cherry Jackson is graduating from Booker T. Washington High School eleventh in her class with a 4.25 GPA. Cherry is co-captain of the field hockey and cheerleading teams. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club at her school. Cherry is vice president of the Scientific Society and Yearbook business manager and on the National Honor Roll. She has received the USAA National Science Award, Outstanding Student of America, Who's Who Among American High School Students, and the USAA National Leadership and Service Award.

Cherry has special gift, a beautiful voice, and she hopes to use that gift in her theatre arts class at college. She is not willing to take the easy way out: she understands that to succeed it takes hard work. Attending college will give her the knowledge needed to become an influential-inspiring educator. Cherry will be attending University of Texas at Austin.


Terrance Lovelady
Phillis Wheatley High School
Hampton University

College is the most effective means of building a foundation of prosperity, gaining knowledge, and creating opportunity for oneself. Theses qualities are essential for living and conquering economic adversity. These are the reasons Terrance Lovelady wants to attend college. He is a graduating senior at Philllis Wheatley High School, and after graduation he plans to attend Hampton University. Earline Marshall, a counselor at Philllis Wheatley High School, says unequivocally that "he is an outstanding young man who will make a great contribution to our society."

Terrance was Senior Class Prince, a member of the National Honor Society, Who's Who Among American High School Students, a Travis Smiley Alumnus, and a Project GRAD Student. His honors include AP English Award, Debate Team Award, and Resume Seminar Participant. His hobbies include basketball, reading and attending various social events. A man once said, "Knowledge is power", and Terrance lives by that statement. He believes that attaining knowledge is the key to diminishing ignorance and illiteracy.


LeKeshia Oten
Phillis Wheatley High School
Lamar University

LeKeshia Oten is a member of the National Honor Society and been recognized in Who's Who Among American High School Students and Who's Who Among American High School English Students and was recently received the AP English Award and represented Wheatley in the UIL competition.

LeKeshia has been described as hardworking, self-motivated, and an outstanding student who takes pride in her work. Her administrators and her peers respect her. She has volunteered through the Junior Achievement Program, tutoring students in the fourth-grade class at Fonwood Elementary and feeding the homeless at the Star of Hope Mission. LeKeshia has always set high standards and has worked hard to achieve her goals. Due to her academic achievements she was able to graduate from high school a semester early, but has opted to stay and take extra courses to prepare for college. She has maintained a 3.44 GPA, graduating as fifth in a class of 124. Her dream of going to college is now a reality; she will be attending Lamar University in the fall, with hopes of one day becoming a stockbroker.


Vanessa Pérez
Stephen F. Austin High School
University of Houston

Vanessa is described as a superb example of a leader who is dedicated, intelligent, and determined. She has consistently made high marks throughout her academic career and has proved her commitment to her peers by participating in many school activities. One quality that separates her from other students is her strong sense of diplomacy in all matters. Vanessa holds a 4.2 GPA and is enrolled in three AP classes. Currently she is maintaining an A average in her AP English class. She has played the "catch - up game" very well.

Vanessa is currently a member of the Superintendent's Ad Hoc Committee, and is the Senior Class President. Vanessa had the distinct honor of serving as emcee at the 2004 State of the Schools luncheon. Vanessa is very active in sports, as well - basketball, soccer, and track.


Crystle Riles
Booker T. Washington High School
Prairie View A&M University

Crystle works extremely hard academically and culturally in order to achieve the highest level of educational success. She wanted to achieve the honor of being the first in a family of six to graduate from high school and pursue a post secondary education.

Realizing the enormous sacrifices her single mother made in order for her to achieve her life's dream, Crystle feels obligated to reward her mother's sacrifices and support by attending college and attaining a degree in sports medicine from a prestigious university. Crystle's academics and community awards include a 4.15 GPA, Who's Who Among American High School Students, Senior Class Secretary, membership in the National Honor Society, Varsity Basketball Captain, and Varsity Track Captain.


Ashley Robicheaux
Kashmere High School
University of Texas at Austin

Ashley is a quiet and unassuming young lady that possesses many talents and is interested in pursuing a career in engineering. She enjoys building computers, reading, playing basketball, playing musical instruments, and watching movies.

Ashley has a 3.8 GPA and is president of the National Honor Society and Student Council, captain of the basketball and softball teams. Included in Who's Who Among High School Students, Ashley has received such honors as Young American Award, NASA Aerospace Scholar, All-Around Student Award, and Outstanding Achievement. In addition to her academic and athletic abilities, Ashley is an accomplished musician.


Armando Sánchez
Sam Houston High School
University of Texas at Austin

Armando's vision for the future fuels his desire to acquire a master's degree in Psychology and own and operate a medical facility. With his parents as examples, he has learned that it's possible to overcome many difficult situations in life and succeed. Academically, Armando has laid the foundation for his success with a 4.1 GPA.

Armando has volunteered for numerous organizations and took part in the Breast Cancer Walk. He has also received many awards and honors - Tiger Pride Award for Technical Writing, Honor Roll, National Honor Roll, Who's Who Among American High School Students, Superior Achievement and Excellence in Academics and Service, and Academic Achievement Awards for Journey Beyond Dreams College Experience Program at Baylor University.


Star'la Shelvin
Kashmere High School
Texas Southern University

Star'la believes that the impact she makes in this world begins with her family, extends to her community, and ultimately impacts the nation. Throughout her life she has striven to do well academically and socially. Academically, she has managed to maintain a GPA that will place her in the top 10 - 15 percent of her graduating class. Socially, in addition to being very active in her church, she participates in cheerleading, dance, concert choir, school newspaper, volleyball, basketball, and track and field, which has enabled her to expand her contributions to the school community in the form of teamwork, leadership, and responsibility.

Star'la aspires to be a Fashion Merchandiser in the retail industry. She has a keen sense of style, intuitive comprehension of fashion, and has a reputation as a trendsetter among her peers.


Kofi Smith
Kashmere High School
University of Houston

Ever since ninth grade, Kofi has known that in order to be truly successful in life, a person must go to college. Through determination and commitment, he has remained focused on achieving that goal, by following a clear academic plan, as attested by his 3.59 GPA. Kofi admires and respects his father and wants to follow in his footsteps to become a college graduate himself.

Kofi has received many awards and honors, including Junior Class President, Senior Class Historian, National Honor Society Historian, Sophomore Most Outstanding English and Honors Student, and Mr. Kashmere All-Around Student. He understands that it's important to give back to your community and has volunteered at the American Red Cross Health Fair and National Honors Society College Day and hosted the Martin Luther King Memorial Program.


Whitney Threadcraft
Middle College for Technology Careers
Howard University

Whitney is a keen historian and loves researching why people do what they do. The inclination to explore and defend is why she has chosen a career in law. She is an avid reader, which allows her to escape to different worlds and visit ideas. She otherwise would not be exposed to in her life.

Whitney has a 3.58 GPA and her awards and honors include National Honor Society, Honor Roll, Junior Class Secretary, and Most Beautiful - 2004. She loves to volunteer in her church and community. She has spent many hours volunteering through HISD's Project Reconnect. Most recently, Whitney had the opportunity to volunteer at the Barbara Jean Hoffman Memorial Foundation golf tournament.


Hung Truong
Robert E. Lee High School
University of Houston-Downtown

A native of Vietnam, where thousands of people live in poverty, Hung has steadfastly stayed a course to realize a dream that so many of us take for granted: to get a high school education and attain a college degree. Many times throughout his short stay in the United States he's been tempted to abandon his education because of cultural and language difficulties. But he stayed on course and emerged victorious.

Hung has a 2.77 GPA. While in Vietnam, he received silver medals in athletic competition and many honors for his academic achievements.


Cordelia Vaughn
Barbara Jordan High School for Careers
Lamar University

Cordelia's accomplishments include "Who's Who Among National High School Students" 2002 - 2004. She received National Minority Leadership Award and American Legion Award and served as Lighthouse Missionary Baptist Church Youth Vice-President and Secretary. Cordelia also served on the Superintendents Ad-Hoc Student Advisory Committee, and Principal's Student Advisory Board. She will be the first one in her family to attend college. She sincerely believes that, with a college education, she will be able to deliver her family from poverty.
