Justin Avery Anderson
Robert E. Lee High School
Texas Christian University

Justin attends Robert E. Lee High School where his cumulative GPA is 3.8/4.0. Justin was elected 2005 Class President and Treasurer for 2003-2004. A member of Student Government, Justin has been doing the Morning Announcements since 2001. He is the Vice President of Best Buddies since 2002. For volunteer work, Justin worked on the Lee High School Beautification Project. As an active Boy Scout member, he has worked 90 hours painting 22 doors in need of a new coat of paint. He completed a volunteer internship with Bill Young Production, Inc. during the summer of 2003. Approximately a year ago, Justin founded a granola company managing to give his mom a large portion of the proceeds to help ends meet at home. He is giving back to the grandmother that took care of him as a young boy, by taking care of her now that she needs him more and more. Further, he owns Justin Anderson Productions, a voice-over and audio production company that specializes in radio branding.

Justin's academic aspirations are to attend the Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University to get the knowledge he needs to succeed in his future business ventures.


Tamika Arrington
Phillis Wheatley High School
Texas Southern University

Tamika attends Phillis Wheatley Senior High School. She has distinguished herself as a determined hard working student. Zonia Davila, from the City of Houston Mayor's office, describes her as enthusiastic and confident. Her many letters of recommendation reverberate her compassion and ability to make a difference. This is further evidenced by her ability to combine extracurricular activities and community service while overcoming the difficulties of youth in today's urban society. Her honors include MVP of the girl basketball team twice, National Honor Roll, Who's Who among American High School Students. She also actively participates in gymnastics tennis volleyball and softball, all of which she has received numerous awards for. She is no stranger to community service. She is involved with, the Peer Educators informing others about HIV/AIDS and the Deputy for voter registration. With the busy schedule Tamika found time to intern with the City of Houston's Mayor's office and work at Six Flags and Holiday Inn.

She realizes the importance of an education, and hopes this scholarship will help her fulfill her dream to earn a degree in Business Administration and own her own business. Tamika says, "Failure is just as easy to combat, as success is to obtain.

Prairie View A&M University

Christopher attends Barbara Jordan High School for Careers. He is an honor roll student and has received numerous honors and awards, which include induction into the National Honor Society and Who's Who among American High School Students. He obtained the rank of JROTC Battalion Staff Officer, won Student Government Awards, the Principal's Honor Roll, Volunteer of the Year Award, 1st Place District Science Fair Award, Perfect Attendance Award, and Good Citizenship Award. He has volunteered in Adopt-A-Block Community Clean-up, volunteers for Habitat for Humanity; St. John's Feed the Homeless, Houston International Festival and Brookhollow Angel Tree Christmas Event.

Othello Bibbs, III
Jesse H. Jones High School
Sam Houston State University

Othello wants a college education because someday he wants to become a sports therapist, design software for sports oriented computer games or an architect using the latest computer technology. Some might say that he is undecided, but Othello will say, he will obtain all the knowledge and training needed in various areas of computer technology and make that into a career that he can enjoy both physically and financially. He hopes to combine the love of sports with a great field of education and create what some people never seem to have, "a job that he both likes and enjoys". Othello wants a college education because, it would prepare him for a career that will challenge him mentally and sustain him financially. A college education will allow Othello into a world he might not otherwise see, meet people form around the world, be taught by the best instructors. Finally, gain invaluable knowledge and information from all walks of life. Watch out college here he comes!


Audrey Campbell
Stephen Pool Waltrip High School
Lamar University

Audrey learned at an early age that life could be a struggle. Through her mother's determination and leadership she has finished the first leg of her academic journey. With a GPA of 3.45 she is embarking on a broad future that will have no limitations of opportunities for her. Audrey would like to major in Pre-Law. Audrey has been a member of the Waltrip High School Ram Band for four years. She has served as a member of the jazz band, concert/symphonic band and is currently the Field Captain and Trumpet Section Leader of the marching band. Audrey truly believes that if she attends college she can make a better life for herself and her family. She is hard working motivated young lady that has set high goals for her life.


David Campos
Phillis Wheatley High School
St. Edwards University

David attends Phillis Wheatley Sr. High School and believes that his desire alone is not sufficient for success. He wants a college education to help him achieve his goals. David plans to attend St. Edwards University in Austin, TX pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Graphic Design. David wants to attain his college degree so that he can be a positive role model for his family and his community. David is the first person in his family to pursue a college degree and he wants to show his younger siblings that they can accomplish whatever they aspire. David believes that a college education is essential for any individual who wants to succeed. He further believes that obtaining his college degree will enable him a more productive and fulfilling future. Once David obtains his Bachelors Degree, he plans to explore the many options that Graphic Design offers so that he may maximize his talents, skills and knowledge. David realizes that there may be many challenges ahead and he eagerly anticipates facing them as he feels the challenges in life help us to develop strong character.


Ashley N. Cooks
Phillis Wheatley High School
Sam Houston State University

Ashely attends Phillis Wheatley High School where her cumulative GPA is 3.25. While at Wheatley High School, Ashley was a member of the National Honor Society. Ashely's community involvement includes tutoring students as an instructor at her church where she is considered to be very responsible and hard-working with a friendly attitude. She also has participated in food drives for the homeless. Described as "consistently pleasant and mature for her age", by one of her teachers, Ashley wants to be the first person in her family to attend college and get a degree. She understands the importance of a college and being independent. Her life-long dream has been to become a teacher so she can continue to make a difference in the lives of young children.

Ashely's clear vision for her future will also help her achieve another goal, to make her family proud of her.


Whitney Simone Dale
Barbara Jordan High School for Careers
Prairie View A&M University

Whitney attends Barbara Jordan High School for Careers. Her special awards, honors and leadership include DECA Vice President, Winner of Retail Merchandising District Competition, National Honor Society, and the National Honor Roll; was 2nd Place winner of Youth Enterprise Contest, and held position in Mademoiselles from 2003 thru 2005. She has volunteered for Adopt-A-Block, Student Council; Breakfast with Santa, DECA, and The Breast Cancer Walk and at St. John's UMC. Whitney has worked for Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts and at Vikki's Fine Foods. Ms. Madeline Hartwell, Marketing Education Instructor, at Barbara Jordan High School for Careers has this to say of Whitney. "I have found Whitney to be a trustworthy, compassionate, and intelligent young lady. I have watched her strive to succeed in school, and accomplish the goals that she set for herself."

Whitney plans to attend Prairie View University.


Mitra Dostyar
Robert E. Lee High School
Texas A&M University

Mitra attends Lee High School. While there, Mitra has received many special awards and honors. She has been on the Honor Roll, received the Perfect Attendance Award, is an Active Member of Distinctive Education Clubs of America, and had been honored by presenting her incredible artwork at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. She has volunteered at the Al-Noor Society of Greater Houston, Inc. and at the Arab American Community and Cultural Center. She has worked at Demassi's Restaurant to earn money to assist her family. Chanell Abagi, Educator at the Home of Small Learning Communities, has this to say about Mitra. "Mitra Dostyar is an exceptional, hard working student. Mitra is extremely academically intelligent. She brings a desire to learn and dedication to perform at her best."


Trenisha Evans
Kashmere High School
University

Trenisha feels that a college education is not an option but a mandatory goal for today's youth. Being the oldest of six, her family expects much of her. She is driven by her desire to fulfill those expectations to succeed and become a roll model for her younger siblings. She wants to set an example and guide them into pursuing a college education.

Trenisha is described as being courteous, dependable, competitive, creative, perceptive, intuitive and determined to succeed. She excels in her every endeavor and is active in the community and in school organizations. She is looking forward to majoring in Radio/Television Broadcasting. Trenisha is a member of the Concert Choir and an officer of Kashmere's Dance Team. She has worked for Harris County Appraisal District and Eagle Global Logistics. Trenisha volunteers and helps with many community activities such as the Lady Preps, health fairs, baby sitting and teaching praise dancing. She feels that the standards for a college education were set high by many African American ancestors such as Booker T. Washington. She does not want to let them down.


Lizvette Guerra
Kashmere High School
University of Texas at Austin

Lizvette attends Kashmere Senior High School of Fine Arts. She has received the following awards Young American Award by the Houston City Council for Community Service; Vice President of the National Honor Society; Vic President of Student Council; Secretary of the Future Business Leaders of America; Gold Medal UIL Editorial Writing; Silver Medal Newsletter Editorial Writing; Gold Medal UIL Voice Competition; 1st Place Environmental Science Fair; Concert Choir Soprano section leader; commendation from National Youth Leadership Forum of Defense, Intelligence & Diplomacy; Honorable mention from Admiral William J. Crowe, Jr., and 2003 Pianist of the Year. Additionally, Lizvette organized activities for children at The Boys and Girls Club, is the Assistant Director of the Children's Choir at Tabernaculo d Vida Church, Minister of Music Children and Youth Departments, Go-Center Chair committee member, and tutored upper-classmen in TAKS. She was selected by the Communities in Schools Program for an internship at Baker Botts LLP during the summer of 2004.

Lizvette has this to say about herself. "Being the first to graduate from high school and go to college in my immediate family is challenging. I am the sole tutor in my home. I am the one my siblings run to for help on their math homework…there is a purpose for everything. One of the purposes may be that I am the one to set the educational standards in my family." Lizvette wants to pursue a career in Business Administration and Human Ecology.


Crystal Kelley
Mirabeau B. Lamar High School
Xavier University

A college education will present Crystal with the best opportunity in pursuing the career and lifestyle she planned for herself. Crystal personally feels that education should be of the utmost importance to young people today.

Crystal wants a college education because it is one of the many privileges minorities were not offered decades ago. It is embedded within her of how her ancestors struggled so that she may have the opportunity to excel in education and make something of herself. She believes in taking advantage of every opportunity, especially if it is to better herself through education. In her opinion, education is the key to a prosperous life. Crystal's mom always wanted her to do what she wasn't able to at her age; that was to attend college. Being a teenage mom held Crystal's mom back some years from pursuing a college education. She wasn't able to experience the college life like dorms, sororities, or just being away from home. Her goal was to teach Crystal to always aim higher and never settle for anything less. By her implementing this positive idea in her head since grade school, Crystal is now more determined than ever. When Crystal finishes her BA her next goal is to get MBA. She is a perfectionist when it comes to education.


Ashley Nachelle Leath
Booker T. Washington High School
University of Houston

Ashley attends Booker T. Washington Senior High for Engineering Professions. Her special awards, honors and leadership include Key Club President; Naval JROTC Squad Leader; Mustering Petty Officer; Who's Who Among American High School Students; National Honor Roll; USAA All American Scholar Award; USAA English Merit Award. She has volunteered for the Kiwanis Annual Barbecue Dinner and Silent Auction and at the Acres Homes Multi-Service Center. Ashley has worked at St. Luke's Methodist Church as a daycare worker and at Whataburger as a cashier. Ms. Vicki Flanery, English Department Chair says of Ashley, "She is a creative and diligent young woman who weighs her options carefully and tries to make decisions based on what is best for her future. Ashley does not allow life's obstacles to get in the way of the achievement of her educational goals."

Ashley wants to become an Architect.


Jos'nae M. Love
Dwight D. Eisenhower High School
University of Houston

Jos'nae attends Dwight D. Eisenhower High School where her cumulative grade point average is 3.2. While at Eisenhower High School, Jos'nae received special awards and honors from several organizations including Honor Roll, National Honor Roll, Who's Who Among American High School Students, Drill Team where her rank was lieutenant, leading a team of over 30 young women and the Dance Academy.

Additionally, Jos'nae volunteered at the Julia C. Hester House where she provided community aid , the America's Choice Daycare, Waste Management's Thanksgiving in the Park, and the Northside Missionary Baptist Church's community clean-up program. She has been employed by McDonald's.

Ms. Valerie J. Porter, Biology Teacher at Eisenhower High School says, "Because of Jos'nae's personal qualities and strengths, a collegiate environment will bring out a performance that exceeds what she has achieved in high school".

Jos'nae has a strong sense of community and plans on majoring in Sociology and then continuing on to law school.


Robert Lyons
Mirabeau B Lamar High School
University of Texas at Austin

Robert's objective in life is to pursue a career in Pre-Medicine. He is involved in many extracurricular activities and has received many awards. Some of his many activities include: Student Council, Big Red Marching Band, City Ballet of Houston and Lamar Ping Pong Club. Some of his awards include President's Academic Excellence Award, National Honor Society, Who's Who Among American High School Students and National Spanish Honor Society. Robert is also involved in the community, volunteering at the YMCA and is a member of South Union Church of Christ Youth Ministry Program. His parents have always emphasized the importance of getting a college education to compete in today's job market. It is his family's legacy. His grandparents passed it on to his parents, they passed it on to him and his brother and he now plans to continue and pass it on to his children. His grandfather has a strong appetite for learning and he hopes to have that same great desire.


Sebastian Millan
Middle College for Technology
Houston Community College

Sebastian Millan attends Middle College for Technology Careers High School where his cumulative GPA is 3.31/4.0. He scored 900 on the SAT exam. While at Middle College for Technology Careers High School, Sebastian received numerous honors and awards including, The Most Outstanding Student, All A's and B's and Perfect Attendance Award. Additionally, he has coached little league baseball, volunteered at Klein High School and mentored other students.

Sebastian has had to earn money to provide for his necessities and has been forced to begin his work career earlier than most. He has worked at construction sites hanging sheetrock, painting, roofing, cutting down trees, brick laying and running electric wiring in new houses. He currently works at Magic Johnson Theaters and works as painter on weekends.

Ms. Sylvia Jones, Counselor at the Middle College for Technology Careers High School has this to say of Sebastian. "The personality of this young man exceeds the normal level of high school students. His reputation of absolute honesty and reliability has been proven in his work. Despite his circumstances he remains focused and very mild mannered. He is the student that every teacher wishes for".

Sebastian's plans include earning an Associate's Degree in Human Resources and a Bachelor's Degree in Management. Ultimately, he wants to open a resource center to assist people in finding jobs, shelter and other human needs.


Jerica C. Nickerson
Booker T. Washington High School
Texas A&M University

Jerica is graduating from Booker T. Washington High School in the top 5% of her graduating class. She feels strongly about education being the pathway to unlimited adventures. She is determined to complete her education, knowing that it is her ticket to better life.

Jerica possesses those qualities which make her a respected young lady among her peers. She is a very busy person, but always finds time to volunteer in the community. Her accomplishments include being a recipient of the National Honor Society, Miss Booker T. Washington High School, All District 2nd Girls Basketball Team, Band Majorette, Who's Who Among American High School Students, and Principal Hall of Fame.


Tiffany Ogburn
Barbara Jordan High School for Careers
University of Houston

Tiffany is a hard working, motivated young lady that has set high goals for her life. She is ranked 13th among 311 students in her class with a GPA of 3.78. Tiffany is working diligently to achieve her dream of becoming a Psychologist. Tiffany is conscious of the ills of society as well. She is often seen around school collecting item for the needy, picking up debris on campus and inviting others to participate in community activities. Tiffany is involved in the Spanish Club, History Club, National Honor Society and a member of the Student Council.


Ryan Zane Oleichi
Stepehn Pool Waltrip High School
Texas A&M University

Ryan attends Waltrip High School where is cumulative GPA is 3.0. He scored 1090 on the SAT exam. While at Waltrip High School, Ryan earned the distinction of 2nd Best Parliamentary Speaker (Invitational Tournament), was a Distinguished Delegate (Youth and Government), was on the Speech and Debate Team and held the office of Treasurer. He is a platoon Sergeant in the JROTC. USA Retired, Robert E. Savage had this to say about Ryan, "Mr. Oleichi is a very trustworthy person. His work ethic is very strong. He is dependable and sets a good example for others. He will be a success in college and in life". Ryan believes that the decision to seek a college degree was made for him early in life and was firmly instilled in him by his now deceased mother.

Ryan wants to get a degree, the first step to overcoming what he calls "family history" and to improve society.


Ivin Jemour Prater
Kashmere High School
Lamar University

Ivin attends Kashmere Senior High School. His special awards, honors and leadership include President of the Freshman Class; ROTC Battalion Commander for the 12th JROTC Battalion; President of Students Taking Actions Not Drugs; Vice President of Peacemakers; Historian of Future Business Leaders of America. Ivin has volunteered with the American Red Cross and as a peer educator for HIV/AIDS Prevention. He has tutored at Christian Faith C.O.G.I.C and has participated in numerous school and community food, clothing and toy drives. Ivin has worked at Six Flags Astroworld, Teen Enterprise and Aramark. Ivin will be the third person and the first male in his family to graduate from high school and the first in the entire family to go to college. He has been accepted at Lamar University where he plans to major in Pre-Law/Political Science and/or Psychology/Pre-Med.


Rachel J. Robinson
Booker T. Washington High School
Prairie View A&M University

Rachel attributes her success in school to being raise by parents to believe that every dream is attainable. She credits her credits with placing a clear vision of the future right in front of her. Her parents are considered her strongest role models.

Rachel has known all of her life that she wanted to teach and, remembers when she was young and would set up stuffed animals and pretend to teach them. She recognizes that teaching is where her heart is. Rachel wants to be able to say that her involvement in the educational process of young children's lives will ultimately lead to their success. Rachel's volunteer service is quite impressive. Her stints include volunteering at the annual walk-a-thon, singing carols and passing out goody bags at the nursing homes, and volunteering at child care centers where she supervised the children.

Rachel's passion for learning has taken her down many roads. She's now hoping to add to her list of accomplishments, being the first grandchild on her mother's side to attend college.


Angeleah Karone Syers
Booker T. Washington High School
University of Oklahoma

Angeleah attends Booker T. Washington High School for Engineering Professionals where her cumulative GPA is 3.82/4.0. She scored 1220 on the SAT exam.

While at Booker T. Washington, Angeleah's special awards, honors and leadership roles include the National Achievement Recommended Scholar, National Honor Society (Secretary), National Ventures Scholar, Northwest District History Fair (3rd Place in 2003), National Honor Roll, People to People Student Ambassador Nominee, the National Student Leadership Conference Nominee, dedicated member of the National Society for Black Engineers, and the Mademoiselles, a community service organization.

Additionally, Angeleah has participated in the Breast Cancer Walk, UNCF Walk-a-thon, BTW Community Walk, Mt. Pilgrim Christmas Program, and has assisted in feeding the homeless. She earns money by working at Limited Too.

Ms. Vicki Flanery, Department Chair-English had this to say of Angeleah, "She takes great pleasure in having her current beliefs and knowledge challenged by new information. She takes no interest in maintaining a particular mindset, for she understands that wisdom is gained through exposure to diverse ideas and people".


Alexis Taylor
Barbara Jordan High School of Careers
Prairie View A&M University

Alexis is graduating from Barbara Jordan High School for Careers with a 4.5 GPA and the upper 10% of her graduating class. While there, Alexis earned special awards, honors an held leadership positions in the following: "A" Honor Roll, Principal Award for maintaining an "A" average throughout the year, National Honor Society, Student of the Month, 1st Place VICA State (Photography), 1st Place District Science Fair, and Class of "05" Parliamentarian. Alexis has a keen perception of how the world is and how it should be run. Alexis has volunteered for the Houston Food Bank Drive, Adopt-A-Block, Feed the Homeless at St. John, Town Hall Meeting on Violence Awareness, Super-Bowl Clean-up, Smoothie King for United Way. She has held jobs at both Fiesta Grocery Store and Jet Learning Laboratory. She is role model for all.

She sincerely believes that a college education is needed to be as prosperous as she desires to be. Her words are, "The hard way out is the best way out".


Amber Thibodeaux
James Madison High School
Prairie View A&M University

Amber has distinguished herself during her high school career as a dynamic and hard working student. Graduating from James Madison High School with a 3.375 GPA, she was an active member in several clubs and organizations: National Honor Roll, National Honor Society's Parliamentarian, Band President, Who's Who Among American High School Students, Squire de Maiselles' President, and Senior Class Parliamentarian.

She volunteered to feed the homeless at Bread of Life, and planted trees for various neighborhood projects. Additionally, Amber has been employed at Thirsty's.

Ms. Sharon Stanford, 12th grade counselor at James Madison Senior High School says of Amber, "She has demonstrated intelligence, caring and concern for others and a willingness to help in any way she can, whenever she can. She is a wonderful young lady with a bright future". A college education will allow Amber to give back to her family. Amber plans to be an architect.


Shawn Michael Anderson
Spring High School
University of Houston

Shawn graduated from Spring High School with a cumulative GPA of 3.2/4.0. His special awards and honors include the President's Award for Academic Excellence, Company Commander - NJROTC, Educations Officer, National Sojourners Association Medal and various other NJROTC academic and merit honors. His community service entails working Caring Cradles, food drives, March of Dimes, and NJROTC Color Guard for school and community events. Shawn wants a college education so that he can be the first college graduate in his family and to attain the skills and tools necessary to be an entrepreneur. Mary Braddock says of Shawn, "He is a very organized, intuitive, and smart young man, but one of the most important traits that Shawn possesses is great manners and respect".


Mary Angela Braddock

University of Houston

Mary graduated from Spring High School with cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0. She has a long list of awards, honors and leadership positions and they include National Honor Society, Spring High School NJROTC: Battalion Executive Officer, Battalion Ops, Academic Team Commander and Female Color Guard Commander, Daughters of the American Revolution, Military Officers of America Association Award, Distinguished Cadet, Most Decorated Cadet and other various awards for academics, physical fitness, leadership and aptitude. Her community service involves volunteering through NJROTC for March of Dimes Walk America and Caring Cradles Community Baby Shower, numerous color guards for school and community events. She worked at Famous Footwear and Lowe's Home Improvement. Mary believes a college education means making the future better for others, to help someone else succeed. She wants to become a substance abuse counselor for teenagers, to help them out of their addiction and function independent of drugs. Gunnery Sergeant Darrell Marshall says, "Angie is very intelligent, goal oriented, energetic, strives for excellence and is driven to accomplish her goals.


Bernard Kenwood Garceau, III
Spring High School
University of North Texas

Bernard is a graduate of Spring High School with a cumulative GPA of 3.8/4.0. His special awards, honors, leadership positions include, National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Honorable in the 2004 Culture Film Contest, 3rd Place in 2005 Spindletop Film Contest - Narrative, 1st Place in 2005 Spindletop Film Contest - Experimental, Best in All Around Film in 2005 Spindletop Film, 2nd Place 2005 Island Festival for Public Service Announcement category. His community service includes tutoring and Champion Forest Baptist Church filming and editing for promotional events. He believes an education is more than just books and a degree; it is all about working with people and learning who you are and developing the strengths that you have. His goal is to attend and graduate from the University of Texas in Denton, TX with a major in Radio, Television and Film.

Brandon is a graduate of Spring High School with a cumulative GPA of 3.55/4.0. His special awards, honors and leader position include Honor roll, 2nd Place in level II controlled non-native Spanish-speaking competition, 2nd in the 2003 CO2 car racing, Award for Outstanding Architectural Graphics Design and Presentation, Attended the Congressional Student Leadership Conference, National Honor Roll, Who's Who in American High Schools, Nominated by The People to People Student Ambassador Program, Inducted by The National Society of High Scholars, Nominated to attend the American Institute for Foreign Studies, Received the Presidential Award for Educational Excellence, Spring HS National Honors Society, Sergeant-At-Arms of the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (V.I.C.A.), Perfect Attendance Award. He has worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor. His community service includes reading to young children and aiding with classroom assignments at Goodman Elementary School and assisted with community car washes and participated in Tae Kwon Do demonstrations through Houston Tae Kwon Do Academy. He believes that a college education is the first step to career success, an introduction into diverse society, a means to honor my family and a means to honor and validate himself. Brandon wants to University of Texas in Arlington and become an architect.


David Eric Thompson
Spring High School
University of St. Thomas

David is a graduate of Spring High School with a cumulative GPA of 3.7/4.0. He scored 1310 on the SAT. He was in the top 5% of his graduating class. His special awards and honors include the National Honor Society, Saxophone section leader for the band and he was member of Spring High Varsity Soccer Team and the Varsity Choir. His community service includes food and toy drives for school and the National Honor Society and Adopt-a-Child Christmas service for needy families. He earned money by working as a lifeguard. In David's opinion, a college education is one of the most important aspects of life today. Brenda L. Phillips of the Spring High School English Department says of David, "I can say without reservation that David is responsible, intelligent, cooperative, and focused". David plans to attend the University of St. Thomas to pursue studies in the medical field.
