Kevin H. Hoffman was elected to the Board of Education in 1999 and reelected in 2003. He was elected by his peers to the position of second vice president for 2000 and first vice president for 2001 and 2002. In 2003 he became the first trustee from District II to serve as President of the Board of Education. Hoffman also served as the board liaison for state and federal legislative matters.
During his tenure, Hoffman established and participated in many educational and community-based programs. In 2001 he created the Barbara Jean Hoffman Memorial Foundation (bjhfoundation.com), a nonprofit organization named in honor of his late mother, which provided over $100,000 in scholarships, and school supplies to thousands of economically disadvantaged children in the Houston area.
As board president in 2003, Hoffman introduced the HISD Board of Education's Monitoring System. This reform-driven board policy is the first of its kind to systematically measure HISD's progress in achieving district goals and core values. |

Hoffman's educational and community affiliations included service on the Board of Directors of the Texas Association of School Boards, Chair-Elect of the National Caucus of Black School Board Members and service on the advisory boards of the Neuhaus Education Center and the Texas Alliance of Black School Educators. He also served as Vice Chairman of the Timbergrove Little League Sports Association.
Mr. Hoffman has been recognized for his community service by the City of Houston, Harris County, the State of Texas, the United States Congress, and the United States Department of Education. He is a recipient of the 2003 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo's Trailblazer Award and the Texas Association of Black School Educators' Leadership Award. Mr. Hoffman has also been recognized by Prairie View A&M University as a Distinguished Alumni.
Hoffman, who holds a BA & MA in Sociology and his wife Angela are both Prairie View A&M University graduates. They have two children who attend public schools.
